Easter 2010

  • 22 April 2010 – Rally and walkabout with the Rt. Hon. Charles Kennedy MP, former Leader of the Liberal Democrats, and Dr. Julian Huppert. (Market Square)
  • General election campaign – polling day on 6 May 2010. Dr. Julian Huppert retained the seat for the Liberal Democrats, with a slightly increased vote of 19,621 (but a slightly reduced vote share of 39.1%), and an increased majority of  6,792 (13.5%). The Labour and Conservative candidates both polled over 12,000 votes, with Labour moving into third place, and the Conservatives moving into second place.

  • AV referendum and local election campaign – polling day on 5 May. The referendum across Britain was lost by a landslide, but Cambridge was one of only 11 areas in the country to vote “Yes”, by 54.3% to 45.7%.

  • General election campaign – polling day on 7 May 2015. Dr. Julian Huppert lost the seat to the victorious Labour candidate Daniel Zeichner by 599 votes, with a slightly decreased vote of 18,047 (and a reduced vote share of 34.9%). Labour jumped from third place to first, increasing their vote by almost half.

  • Much of Easter Term was spent focussing on campaigning in the 23 June referendum to remain in the European Union. While the national result was a 52%-48% split in favouring of leaving the EU, Cambridge was one of the most heavily pro-Remain areas in the UK.

Easter 2017

  • Easter Term 2017 was dominated by the snap general election campaign called during the preceding Easter vacation – polling day was on 8 June 2017. Dr. Julian Huppert failed to retake the seat for the Liberal Democrats, with the Labour lead for the incumbent MP Daniel Zeichner increasing from 599 votes to 12,661. The Liberal Democrats held on to second place.

  • Following a vote at the Easter Term 2017 AGM, Cambridge Student Liberal Democrats (CSLD) are formally renamed the Cambridge University Liberal Association (CULA) over the summer.
