  • 9 April 1992 – Polling day in the general election. David Howarth contested the seat for the first time as the Liberal Democrat vote plummeted, polling 10,037 votes (19.87%) and dropping from second place to third of six candidates. Labour jumped from third place to first, to take the seat from the Conservatives.

  • 1 May 1997 – Polling day in the general election. Geoffrey Heathcock contested the seat as the Liberal Democrat vote dropped again, polling 8,287 votes (16.10%), coming third of eight candidates. The Labour majority erupted from 500 to 16,000 – the highest ever recorded by any party in Cambridge.
