  • 9 June 1983 – Polling day in the general election. Matthew Oakeshott contested the seat for the SDP-Liberal Alliance, polling 14,963 votes (29.68%), finishing second of four candidates. This represented significant progress, and was the first time since 1923 that the Liberals or their allies had not come third in Cambridge. The Conservative incumbent was re-elected.
